Over the past two decades, Nepal has made substantial progress in reducing maternal and newborn deaths, with increased utilisation of antenatal care and institutional delivery playing a critical role in these improvements. However, significant geographic inequities remain, particularly in remote mountain districts where access to quality services continues to lag behind national averages.
Drawing on 28 years of experience in delivering quality maternal, newborn, and child health services in the Humla district, this policy brief presents evidence and lessons learned from Adara’s partnership with government across five health facilities in Humla. It highlights practical approaches that have contributed to increased institutional delivery in one of Nepal’s most remote districts and identifies key investments required to ensure that women and newborns in hard-to-reach areas can access safe, respectful and high-quality maternal healthcare.
